Countdown - by Deborah Wiles


Countdown is a multi-media style book. As you read the fictional storyline you will find a plethora of primary sources scattered throughout the book. If you decide to read the book instead of complete the centers you will need to do the following.

1. Complete a Character Map for Uncle Otts and two other characters. You may use any format you would like to describe the character.(Mindmap, drawing, descriptive paragraph etc.) Your character map should give anyone a clear vision of what that character is like, without reading the book. You must address the following question...
*How does this characters traits and/or actions relate to the historical theme in the book?


2. Select one primary source for each of the following section of chapters (indicated on linked sheet). Describe the topic in a manner that your peers will easily understand what it is. Then explain the historical significance and why you believe the author included it in the book. If you find primary sources online, please make sure to share the link. (Example of Kennedy's Speech is below)


3. CHALLENGE- Your teacher has found over 50 Pop Culture
(Cultural activities or commercial products reflecting, suited to, or aimed at the tastes of the general masses of people)references. How many can you find????
4. Reading About History-As you are reading complete the following worksheet comparing the historical events to current day issues. Select one of the following topics to compare... Sports, Fashion, Media (tv, radio etc), Education, Technology.
